During my time in Phoenix I decided to hike the trails behind my condo. When I asked about the trail, the lovely woman at the front desk told me it would take about 2-3 hours to complete the hike. It was a beautiful day with a big blue sky, so I grabbed my gear, my water and went on my way.
The trail I chose was carved into the rocks and signpost where used to indicate the right direction. Look up the mountain, as I mentally prepared for my hike, I noticed that the trail was not visible. The view reminded me of something that I heard Jack Canfield say. According to Jack, when most people set out on any journey, they have a need to see the whole path before they begin. He likened it to getting in your car and expecting the headlights to light up the entire route for your five-hour trip. We know that doesn’t really happen. We accept that we will only see a few feet in front of us.
Are you willing to begin your journey without seeing the entire path?
Or do you wait, expecting someone to light the path for you?
Trusting that the path will be revealed, I began my journey. Once I got a few feet into my journey I began to see a trail was worn into the rocks. As I took each step, the trail became easier to find. The reality was, I had to take my first step and trust that my next step would be revealed. Similarly, I believe that entrepreneurship is a total faith walk. It is only when you risk taking your first step and remain in faith filled action, will your vision ever become a reality. You soon realize that you don’t have to know how to get to from point A to point B. All you need to know is how you are going to start. Each time you take action, that action actually reveals or causes your next action.
As my hike progressed, I noticed a few key things. First, I would follow a path that led me to a dead end! I would then turn around and I’d go back to the place where I made the incorrect choice. I would scout the area and notice another path leading in a different direction. Very similar in business and life, we may choose a wrong path. This is when many people become discouraged and quit. They believe their wrong choice represented a failure, rather than realizing that their first choice is rarely ever their last choice.
Success is a simple as turning around, looking for the lesson, and course correcting.
Second, I would get to places on the trail where the rocks seem to go straight up. I would look at the obstacle in front of me unsure I was able to successfully climb. I would then watch other hikers move down the mountain or someone pass me and climb with ease. Following their example, I would do exactly what they did. Once I got into action I realized it was actually quite simple, the obstacle looked bigger than it was. Isn’t that true in life? We spend too much time thinking about something we want to accomplish and we allow our fears and feeling of intimidation expand the obstacle, making it appear bigger and harder than it actually is. Yet once we get into action, we realize it was so much simpler than we thought it would be. The trick is not to diminish your success. It’s important we celebrate that we overcame our fears and risked taking action. By modeling others, in my case the hikers, I was able to succeed. No matter what your goal is, success is often available when we find someone to model.
Success always leaves clues!
As you stand at the base on life’s mountains, are you choosing to standing still afraid to take action because you don’t believe you have all the answers? Or are you willing to begin your journey and let your first step inform your next step? To choose success is to walk in faith. It is to trust that you have the brilliance inside you to figure out each step in your journey.
