Grind for a Year or Sprint for 90 Days!

The Neuroscience of Focus and Momentum

Neuroscience tells us that our brain thrives on short bursts of focus, measurable progress, and the promise of a reward. Our prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that governs executive function, loses interest when goals are too far in the future or lack clear structure.

As my guest Hala El Khoury shared in our interview, “The more immersive the experience, the stronger the pathways that are connected, and the more pathways that are created.” When we actively engage the brain with short-term visioning, writing, and action, we rewire it for momentum and clarity.

Ninety days is just enough time to build something meaningful and short enough to feel urgent and doable.

1. We Can Do Anything for 90 Days

In network marketing, this became our rallying cry: We can do anything for 90 days!

Why? Because 90 days invites focus, motivation, urgency, and excitement. You move with purpose because the reward isn’t a vague “someday.” It’s just around the corner.

And here’s the key: celebration matters.

As Hala explained, “When we celebrate a win…it helps prime the brain to see our accomplishments, even if they’re little things.” Celebration activates the reticular activating system (RAS), the brain’s internal filter, training it to look for evidence that success is happening.

But it’s not just about the dopamine hit that comes with achieving the goal. Hala reminds us that deep, fulfilling celebration involves oxytocin: “That’s the ‘Ahh, I feel so amazing.’ The emotion of fulfillment.” The key here is not to set up a dynamic where you continually celebrate the task and chase the next goal for the dopamine hit. Instead, it is essential to acknowledge who you’re becoming and focus on the transformational experiences on the journey.

2. Red Work and Blue Work: Time to Act, Time to Think

In his book Leadership Is Language, David Marquet introduces the concept of Red Work and Blue Work:

Blue Work – thinking, planning, evaluating, and learning.
Red Work – action, execution, and doing.

A 90-Day Action Plan integrates both. You start with intention, move with focused action, and then pause to reflect and recalibrate. This intentional pause is where growth lives.

As Hala put it, “When you’re working toward goals, you are creating new pathways in your brain and upgrading the person you are.” Every cycle becomes a growth loop.

By building in moments of celebration, learning, and self-check-ins, we keep our RAS activated, filtering out distractions and helping us stay aligned with our purpose.

3. A Game-Changer for Growth, Feedback, and Confidence

Here’s where the 90-Day Action Plan truly shines in leadership: as an evaluation tool.
I have been introducing my clients to this tool over the past few years. Their feedback is that this tool consistently shifts the evaluation process from vague and impersonal to an intentional personal conversation focused on clear actions, personal learning, and growth.

Why? Because each individual builds a personalized plan that is evaluated and supported by their supervisor.

The results? They take ownership of the process and gain clarity on what “good to great” looks like. Most importantly, they feel seen, valued and deeply supported.

As Hala shared, “When you create space to reflect on where goals are coming from, and you’re bold and audacious enough to flirt with the goal…you create an opportunity to become someone new.”

The 90-Day Action Plan builds confidence, self-leadership, and deep accountability. All qualities that create the foundations of any high-performing, healthy culture.

Final Thoughts: Lead with Intention. Celebrate with Joy.

A 90-Day Action Plan is more than just a strategy. It’s a mindset. It’s a rhythm of transformation. It creates a structure where urgency meets reflection. And where every win, big or small, fuels the next leap forward.

So, here’s my challenge to you:

What could you accomplish if you committed to just 90 days of focused action, reflection, and celebration?

Because the truth is, you can do anything for 90 days.

And when you do, you might surprise yourself with how far you’ve come and who you’ve become.
