“Health is a relationship between you and your body” -Terri Guillemets

How many times have you gone on some crazy diet, spent long hours in the gym and achieved your goals, only to see it slip away as you become consumed with life’s demands and responsibilities? If you answered yes, you are like 45 Million Americans who made a New Years’ Resolution that ended before it actually started.

Like our guest Julie, I used to think that the secret to a great physique and optimal health was to eat less and exercise more. Now I know this is the furthest thing from the truth. Great health and a strong, lean physique occurs when there is an energetic alignment between the mind, the body and the spiritual self. In other words, I began to achieve optimal health when I became aware of how my mindset affected my self-image. When I say mindset, I am referring to how my limiting thoughts and beliefs as well as how unresolved past experiences shaped how I viewed myself and what I gave myself permission to achieve.

I now understand that how we look is determined by how we care and respect our self in four key areas and that self-care and self-respect is a life long journey rather than a fad diet or a quick cosmetic fix. When Julie began to understand that her health could not be created through crash diets or an off and on exercise program, she chose to begin to master her mindset. These are the areas that Julie learned to focus on;

Fitness: This is the movement of your body a minimum of 15 minutes 5 days per week. This is learning that exercise is a vital component of healthy aging. It is resistance training to build muscle, cardio for increased endurance and stretching and core strength for continued flexibility and balance.

Health: This is our nutrition, hydration, sleep and exercise. Whole organic foods, half your body weight in ounces of water as well as all the necessary vitamins and minerals. What pulls it all together is sleep. When we are sleeping our body heals, grows and recovers. A minimum of seven hours is recommended.

Wellness: This is your mindset. It is how we cope with stress and the challenges we face each day. It is our self-talk both positive and negative as well as the influence created by our interactions and communication with others. Ultimately it is to understand how our beliefs, values and past experiences impact our ability to create the results we desire.

Environment: Any result you desire is made easier when you surround yourself with people who are on the same journey and have a high commitment to achieving results. Similarly, all successful people have coaches and mentors for guidance and accountability.
