I have been having amazing conversations with my friends about freedom.  What does it truly mean? And are we truly free?  This discussion brought me back to the time when I was working and living in Toronto.  Most would say I had a great job, a beautiful family, a wonderful home and the blessing of living in a beautiful area of the city.  On the outside things looked really good, on the inside however, I secretly felt anything but free.

SG1 Are you free_ What does freedom truly mean_

Although I had built a career I once loved, I no longer felt passionate about what I did. The policies, paper work and demanding long hours had begun to take the joy out of the service delivery.  The daily two-hour commute, combined with the responsibilities that come with balancing family and a career had me feeling exhausted.  I felt immense pressure to please everyone, I was anything but free.  I hadn’t been on vacation in years and I had stopped doing many of the things I once loved to do.  I felt lost, stuck and frustrated.

Are you free?  What does freedom truly mean?

These are the two questions I have been exploring with my friends.  Surprisingly, most of us were unsure if we were truly free and admittedly too busy to actually really consider the concept of freedom.  The meaning of freedom, we decided, was to have the ability to be totally self-expressed in all areas of your life.  The real question then becomes, what does it take to be fully self-expressed?

Health + Wealth = Freedom

If you’ve seen some of my most recent Facebook posts, you may have noticed this simple equation.  The equation is based on two beliefs.  First, health is the foundation of any action.  It creates the fuel, energy and vitality for all things we do.  Think of someone who is suffering from any health challenge, they frequently lack energy and most often feel restricted. Their mind may be willing, but the weight of their health challenges decrease their confidence and belief in what their body is capable of.  They are not free or fully self-expressed.

SG3 Health is the foundation of any action.

Now think of someone who is challenged financially.  Although they may choose to not speak of, or pay attention to money, like their health, their access is once again restricted. They are now burdened with the worry and stress that is constantly present when any vital resource is restricted.  Once again, energy is restricted and their freedom to live a fully self-expressed life is limited.

Having adequate money yet no time can also limit your self-expression and ultimately your freedom.  In today’s society we are quietly conditioned to live for tomorrow.  Many call it retirement.  Unfortunately, tomorrow is not promised.  Time is a valuable resource that cannot be replaced.  Sadly, many people miss opportunities to experience new levels of self-expression, by putting off until tomorrow what was only promised today.

SG5 Tomorrow is not promised.

As 2018 unfolds, I invite you to design a life that has you physically, emotionally and spiritually free.  My desire is to surround myself 10 like-minded individuals who have a burning desire to live life on their own terms. Individuals who want to take on their personal freedom and will challenge me to live in fun, play and limitless creation.

If this is you, let me know.  I’m curious to hear what freedom looks like for you.
