The Difference Between Leading and Managing

You can listen to the podcast here.

When I was an employee, I was often told I was an excellent leader. I had successfully led a number of teams, and moved them from producing at a normal level to becoming high functioning, cohesive teams. I had evidence that led me to believe I was an effective leader.

When I got into network marketing, I soon learned that my so called excellent leadership skills weren’t as effective.  I was suddenly leading a volunteer army and to be successful, my definition of leadership needed to shift.

SG2 Leadership is….. The willingness to take 100% responsibility for yourself and the life you create.

My first realization was I no longer had a title or leverage of job description called manager.  I was simply Suzan Hart. I was the new kid on the block who had just entered a new profession.  I had little experience and no track record of success. My second realization was I didn’t have a paycheque to offer.  A paycheque creates serious leverage.  It quietly gets people to take action, not because they want to, but because they have to in order to get paid.

So here I am in network marketing and I have no positional power, nor do I have a paycheque.  All I have is a big dream, lots of belief, and a lofty vision. Suddenly leadership took on an entirely different meaning. The only power I had was my personal power; the power of my vision, my certainty, and my inspired action.

SG7 Leadership is thinking big when others are thinking small.

As I continued my journey I began to realize that leadership is the act of doing.  It is a state of being. It is who you become along the journey. The fact of the matter was, the only person I could actually lead was myself as I am the only person I truly control. I soon began to understand that to lead myself was to expand what I now call my personal mastery. The more personal mastery I developed, the more influence I created.

Today I truly believe those of us who are willing to take 100% responsibility for ourselves and the life we create, naturally lead by example. When you lead by example you inspire people, and you actually gain influence.  People choose to follow you, not because they have to, they follow because they are inspired by who you are being. They are inspired by what you are up to in the world and the vision you have casted for your life. The beauty is they are not following as a raving fan. Rather they follow because they are inspired to achieve what you have achieved, do what you’ve done, and ultimately walk along side you.
SG3 Walk with people who inspire you by who theY have chosen to be in the worldEach day, as I rise, I now know that I am the first person I must lead and inspire. When I am able to inspire myself, I begin the process of living into the next best version of myself. You see it is in the middle of the growth and expansion of self, that leadership is caused and ultimately ignited.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on leadership and what you’ve learned on your leadership journey.
