This week I would like to start our conversation by thanking Ms Linda C Clemons for hosting a wonderful event a few weekends ago in Indianapolis. It was a dynamic event with Table Top discussions and gifted speakers. To all my Sisterpreneurs in the room, OH-My-Gosh, it was just so much fun to meet each and every one of you.
Every time I go to an event, I arrive with the expectation that I’m going to meet someone or have a conversation that’s going to touch me or change the way I look at things.
One of the conversations I had at this particular event, was on the topic of Influence and how it affects our mindset. I asked myself “Who am I truly spending my time with?” I was really looking to see if I was putting myself in spaces, situations and relationships, that allow me to grow.
I acknowledged that I have coaches in many areas of business and personal leadership that are helping me grow. They pour their knowledge and insight into me which requires that I stretch.
What I hadn’t take into consideration, was the impact of all the other people that I spend time with. I’ve been told in the past that it’s important to guard your mind and your energy because the influences you receive are processed internally. They are tested against your values and beliefs. They are compared to the stories in your mind of past events, good or bad. Whether you realize it or not, every influence you receive creates a thought and an action or decision.
Reflecting on my external influences reminded me of when I first started on my entrepreneurial journey. During my 2 hour commute each day, the only thing I listened to in my car was personal development CD’s. I read when I had spare time. I turned off my cable and I surrounded myself with a group of people that were all in the same conversation, moving in the same direction. Back then, I was the ‘newbie’ in the skills required for entrepreneurship and network marketing. The conversations were more advanced than what I was used to and it felt as though I was constantly climbing a giant proverbial ladder to catch up and learn.
The question I asked myself at Linda’s event is “Am I still in that environment to the extent that I’m required to be, to get what to get what I believe I deserve?” I realize that in some ways I am… but in many ways, I am not.
I spent my flight home brainstorming on how I expand my network of who I’m spending time with on a regular basis. How do I spend more time with people who stretch me? People who I’m climbing to catch up to? People who have knowledge and expertise more advanced than mine, so I must truly stretch to reach their level.
How do I create and constantly re-create an environment that demands I consistently grow until I reach the level of success I know I deserve?
Once I began diving deeply into this, I began thinking of not just my mentors and my mentees, but my day to day activity. What am I doing with all the time in my day? What am I watching and listening too, and what impact does it have on who I’m in the process of becoming?
The people who know me the best know that I have already developed the skills, acquired the knowledge and taken the action steps required to achieve success. Yes I have, but I’m not stretched to the capacity that will get me where and what I want, so I am required to stretch again.
It was a beautiful conversation and I am grateful for the gift. It challenged me and gave me a proverbial kick in the butt. Every now and then you get to look at something from a different perspective, and this concept of influence raised a lot of questions for me, which is why I wanted to share it with all of you.
So I’m going to ask you, what are you doing with the moments of your day? Who and What are the influencers that are having an impact on who you are in the process of becoming? Are you being stretched or are you stuck where you are?
For me, it’s time to mind my mindset. Is it time for you?
