Do Healthy People Make More Money?

Listen to the Podcast here

I recently spoke at a conference where we did Ted Talks or Power Talks. All the speakers were required to introduce a brand new BIG idea or a BIG question. My BIG question was…

“Do people who are physically healthy and physically fit out earn, make more money and keep more wealth than people who are not?”

I found it a curious question. In my preparation, I began looking at some statistics and one of the things I found fascinating was 62% of all bankruptcies particularly in the US, are due to medical issues and health challenges. Then I also found out that if you are poor, you are 5x more likely to have health challenges. Then this statistic blew me away… If you are obese by the time you are 40 years old, if you are female you will have spent an EXTRA $600,000 and if you are male an EXTRA $320,000 on food in your life, compared to a person who is not obese.

Imagine what you could have done with that money. It is quite significant.

SG1 Do people who are physically healthy make more money-

During my research, I realized that those statistics could make sense. I understand that if you are poor, you typically have less access to medical care and fewer healthy-lifestyle resources and so the likelihood of you having some health challenges would be greater.  As a result, I decided to narrow my focus.

What if I took two people from the same socioeconomic status, one fit and healthy and one not … who would earn more income?

What I found was that people who are physically fit and exercise regularly tend to invest in a 401K or, in Canada an RSP more often than people who are NOT physically fit and do not exercise regularly. The reasoning behind this statistic is that people who are physically fit practice Forward Pacing. This means that they look into the future at their desired outcome, status, or situation, and plan for it now. The reason they take care of their health is that they have an intention of being healthy down the road. The result of this practice is they are able to attach the same focus and intention to their income and wealth creation. I found that quite interesting.

I also discovered that people who have low credit scores and don’t manage their money as effectively, have a higher risk of issues such as heart disease and high blood pressure. Looking at a lack of planning and a chaotic lifestyle, there is very much a parallel.

SG5 What are your health habits saying about your bank account-

The final fascinating statistic I will share with you, is when looking at the population in general 34% of those people polled reported being satisfied with their financial situation. When they took that same group, and they looked at the responses from only the people who were also physically fit and healthy, the level of satisfaction with their financial situation jumped to about 64%. This indicates that the people who are physically fit and healthy earn a higher income and tend to save more and have more wealth than someone who’s not.

For me all my findings are really quite fascinating. I have always felt there was a parallel between your health and fitness and your wealth creation. To see that there is statistical data showing a real correlation is quite appeasing.

So why am I sharing this with you?

If you want to bring your finances to a new level or increase your business productivity, possibly you might want to dial in your physical fitness. If you are already doing well financially but your health isn’t where you want it to be, imagine what might be possible if you actually dial up your health. The habits you practice with your health are very similar to the habits you practice with your money, your relationships and your savings.
