Feast or Famine… What’s Your Intention?
Successful healthy eating during the holidays truly depends on your mindset or the intention you set.
Are you going into the holidays with this is my “last supper” mentality? Is your plan to feast, over indulge, and blow your health plan to smithereens?
Or.. does the fear of gaining have you going into the holidays as if you were in the desert, ready to deny yourself of the foods and desserts you love.
The intention you set has everything to do with the success you will experience. Go into the holidays with the intention to honour your health, yet ready enjoy some of your favourite treats. You will be surprised the impact a clear intention will have on your choices.

One of the best tips I learned was to ensure I hydrated and nourished my body during the holidays.
When you drink sufficient amounts of water and fuel your body with excellent nutrition you are less likely to overindulge. First, I recommend drinking water when you wake up and before bed. Also make water your chaser after each alcoholic beverage. Second I have learned to have at least one nutritionally dense meal replacement shake each day during the holidays. The result, I eat less and feel satisfied.
Don’t skip any meals over the holidays…
The trick to maintaining your weight during the holiday is actually to eat. Often we skip meals as we save room for the Big Dinners. Somehow we convince ourselves that overeating once during the day is going to result in NO weight gain.
Small nutritious meals throughout the day will have you ready for dinner without feeling starved and deprived. This will avoid the ‘eyes bigger than your belly’ situation. I like to have breakfast, a nutrient dense meal replacement shake for lunch, fruits as a snack and then my holiday meal.

Nothing more uncomfortable than over eating. As you consume your high carb & protein rich holiday dinner, one of my recommendations is to commit to never over eat.
Here are a few tips to ensure you enjoy every bite and avoid over eating:
- Allow your protein and carbs to fill one half of your plate, fill the rest with vegetables and salad.
- Do not over load your plate
- Savour every bite
- Make your meal a marathon rather than a sprint. Let time pass before you reach for seconds. This will give time for you to determine if you are full.
- Select healthy smaller portions of dessert or prepare a lighter healthier dessert.
Get off the couch!
Find fun ways to be active as a family during the holidays. I traditionally take a break from my workouts during the holidays, however this does not mean I stop moving. Dance, skate, ski, or just go for a walk. The trick is to do something active and fun.
